William J. “W.J.” Freeman, loving son of the late Willie Martin Freeman and Julia Guinn Freeman was born September 14, 1925 in Gibson, North Carolina. He was a World War II Veteran who proudly served in the United States Army. Following his tour of duty, W.J. was blessed to find the love of his life and married Edell on May 9, 1949 and raising their family in a Christian home. He was a humble, hard-working man retiring after many years from Pilot Freight Carriers. He faithfully served as a member of the Springfield Church of God. Gardening, reading, exercising and especially attending church were many of his favorite ways to spend his time. The love of family and sharing time with them were most precious to him. W.J. entered into his Heavenly home at the age of 96 on January 6, 2022. A true servant of Christ who will truly be missed.
With his parents, a brother, Clyde Freeman and sister, Elsie F. Walters preceded him in death.
W.J. leaves behind his devoted wife of 72 years, Edell Canady Freeman of their home in Gibson; sons, Kenny Freeman of Midland, NC and William T. “Timmy” Freeman (Windy) of Garden City, SC; his daughter, Geraldine F. Blackwell (Taz) of Gibson; brother, Boyd Franklin Freeman of Laurinburg; sister, Donnie F. Stanton of Laurinburg; grandchildren, Paige Soles ( Ray ), Scotty Blackwell ( Cheryl ), Kaylee Freeman, Colby Freeman; great grandchildren, Brooke King (Kyle), Lindsay Chavis (Nick), Keith Blackwell, Mallory Tickell, Aaron Brown, Kaytlin Short, Kathleen Ard, Seth Burgess; great-great grandchildren, Paisleigh Hendrix, Bryce King, Sutton Blackwell, and Madisynn Chavis. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, loving family, many friends and church family.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at the Springfield Church of God officiated by Rev David Shoemake. Burial will follow the service in Pinecrest Cemetery. Family will receive friends prior to services on Sunday, beginning at 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Springfield Church of God.
