William LeGette McLean

William LeGette McLean, of Laurinburg passed away on Thursday, October 23 following a valiant battle with cancer and other complications.  Born August 11, 1937, he was the son of Archie Maynard McLean of Maxton and Kate Alexander McLean of Huntersville.  He graduated from Maxton High School in 1955 and pursued studies in Business and Accounting at Carolina Business College and Pembroke State University.  He joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 1961 where he served until 1966, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant and was a member of the 1/108th Regiment Rifle Team at Fort Jackson, SC. 

On May 22, 1962, he married Charlotte Baxley of Lumberton and the two enjoyed 63 happy years of marriage.  In 1965 he began a career in business finance in Scotland County which included service at Morgan Mills, Inc. as an accountant, then later as accounting manager for Richmond Converters, Inc.  and finance manager for both Armstrong Textile Operations and Pirelli Armtrong Tire Corporation.  He later served as both finance manager and vice president of finance at Rogosin Convertors, Inc. He retired in 2006 as site manager for the new KordSA, USA, Inc. facility in Laurel Hill and was instrumental not only in the construction of that facility but also in keeping that business in Scotland County during company restructuring.  After retirement he served part-time as finance manager for Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, of which he later became a member following the closure of his home church, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church near Maxton.

Raised outside Maxton, he was a product of a family which had strong Christian faith and heritage centering around Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of which he was a fourth-generation family member.  He served this church faithfully for many years as a deacon and was the founding trustee for the foundation established for the preservation and upkeep of the church following its closing.  His commitment to his faith and beliefs were evidenced in all that he did both professionally as well as personally.  He was known for his keen sense of humor and cordial smile as well as his soft-spoken, common-sense leadership worthy of emulation.

He was a member and president of the Mormax Club of Maxton and served on the Finance Committees of the Scotland Memorial Hospital Foundation as well as Hospice of Scotland County.  Despite many work responsibilities and commitments, he was a consummate family man and loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a friend to many.

He is survived by his wife Charlotte of the home, daughters Anne (Bill) Caudill of Laurinburg and Marie (Jim) Tracy of Asheville, as well as grandson Daniel McQueen Caudill of Raleigh and granddaughters Kate McLean Tracy and Grace Kennedy Tracy of Asheville.  He was predeceased by his older brother Archie Clyde McLean of Rockingham and grandson John Alexander Caudill of Winston-Salem and Laurinburg.

The family will receive visitors at the home, 11360 Fairway Drive, Laurinburg from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2025. 

Funeral services will take place at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, 600 W. Church Street on Monday, October 27 at 1 p.m. followed by graveside committal at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 850 Mt. Moriah Road, Maxton.
