Verna Polston Snead, age 90, of Laurinburg, went home to be with her Lord and Savior early Sunday morning, September 22. The youngest of six children, she was born in Lumberton, N.C. on August 8, 1934, the daughter of Charles Douglas Polston and Frances Hughes Polston, both deceased. She is a 1952 graduate of Laurinburg High School and attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia. Verna worked for the Department of Social Services for 13 years before leaving in 1967 to be a full-time homemaker.
Verna was a loving wife of 62 years to the late Alfred Snead. She dearly loved her husband and children and devoted herself to caring for them. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her special joy, and she always enjoyed their visits. Sewing was one of her hobbies, and she made numerous dresses for herself and her daughter. She loved creating lasting memories of family life through the compilation of photo albums.
A charter member of New Hope Baptist Church, Verna enjoyed singing in the choir, participating in senior adult activities, and serving in other areas. In earlier years, she taught children’s Sunday School classes and helped with Vacation Bible School.
In addition to her husband and parents, Verna was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Wiley and Ruby Lee Driggers; brothers, James Albert Polston, Norman Polston, and Malcolm Polston; and grandson, Timothy Lamm.
Left to cherish her memory are children, Stephen Snead (Vickie) and Sandra Lamm (Kenny); grandchildren, Kevin Lamm (Zion), Katie Beekman (Jonathan), and Rebecca Snead; great-granddaughters, Raelyn Beekman and Zoe Lamm; sister-in-law, Sarah Polston; and multiple nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 28, at Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel in Laurinburg. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
The family requests that memorial donations be made in her memory to New Hope Baptist Church, 11480 Hasty Road, Laurinburg, NC 28352.
