Thomas Edward "Blaze" Hayes Obituary

Thomas Edward “Blaze” Hayes was born December 1, 1956 in Dillon County, South Carolina, loving son of the late Catherine Seales Hayes Marvin and the late John Phillip “Jack” Hayes.  He had strong ties to Scotland County but spent most of his adult life in the High Point/Greensboro area. Blaze passed away at the age of 67 on February 28, 2024.

To know him was to love him.  He had the most generous and caring heart and was always taking care of others, putting others before himself.  His bigger-than-life personality took him far in life both personally and professionally.  His reach goes far greater than we can imagine.

Blaze was a UNC graduate and an avid Tarheel fan.  His career began as a high school history teacher and then he served as an Assistant Principal at Trinity High School with the Randoph County School System.  During his time at Trinity High School, he discovered his love for yearbooks and the relationships that go along with them.  He retired from Walsworth Publishing company in 2021 where he was a sales rep and Territory Sales Manager for many years.  He continued to remain active after retirement in the industry consulting and conducting workshops across the country.

His greatest loves were his family, including his dogs, Gracie, Cassie and now Zoey.  He was a doting uncle and especially loved talking about his great nieces and nephew to anyone who would listen.  His circle of friends goes far and wide and includes his Seven Gates community, Walsworth family and Fellowship Presbyterian Church family.  He was a dedicated runner and recently enjoyed the sport of pickleball.

Blaze was very active in Fellowship Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder, served on the Life Ministry Team and greatly supported the Mission Ministry Team.  He co-taught a preschool Sunday School class and also attended youth ministry events.  He was very involved in weekly deliveries with Backpack Beginnings and received great joy through this ministry.

He is preceded in death by his mother Catherine Seales Hayes Marvin, father John Phillip “Jack” Hayes, stepfather Richard B Marvin; his brother, John Phillip Hayes, Jr., his partner Robert Tritschler; and close friend Candy Krusa.

His survivors include sister-in-law, Deborah Hayes of Laurinburg; niece, Dana Hayes Cheshire (Chris) of Cary; nephew, John Phillip “Phil” Hayes III (Molly) of Laurinburg; great nieces and nephew, Anna Cheshire, Sarah Kate Cheshire, Hollyn Hayes, and John Phillip “JP” Hayes IV, along with his extended family, Chip Millikan of Greensboro, Denise and Willie Milligan and family of Surfside Beach, SC, and Jimmie Ann Clark of McColl, SC.

A graveside memorial service will be held Sunday, March 10 at 3:00 pm at the Seales Cemetery (also known as Tabernacle Cemetery), officiated by Rev. C. F. McDowell, III and Rev. Dr Kathryn Campbell.   Please plan to enter at 8520 Tartan Road Laurinburg, NC.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date at Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
