Shirley Hunt Strickland

Shirley Hunt Strickland of Laurinburg departed this life at the age of 71 on January 19, 2025.

She was the loving daughter of the late Carol Hunt Brown, born October 17, 1953 in Scotland County, NC. Shirley began her working career with Abbott Laboratories leaving with twenty years of dedicated service to run John’s Convenience Store and then Joe’s Place with her late husband, John until 2011. Upon her husband's retirement she finished her working career with Walmart retiring in 2023. She faithfully served as a member of Pleasant View Presbyterian Church.

Shirley enjoyed cooking wonderful meals, watching reality shows on Television, and traveling to the beach. She was an avid sports fan, especially for the Dallas Cowboys Football Team and UNC Tar Heel Basketball Team. Shirley loved her family and cherished time shared together especially with her grandchildren. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be dearly missed.

Along with her mother, she is preceded in death by husband, John Earl Strickland, Sr.; brothers, Charlie Ray Hunt and Earl Hunt.

Shirley is survived by son, John Earl Strickland, Jr., and wife, Christy of Grantsboro; daughter, Portia S. Brazelton and husband, Michael of Laurel Hill; brother, Paul Hunt of Asheboro; and sister, Lucy Locklear of Laurinburg; adored grandchildren, William Warren, Jr., David Penny, Dixon Strickland, Lexi Strickland; along with a host of loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel with burial following in Hillside Memorial Park.  Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
