Shirley Dunn Obituary

Shirley Hunt Dunn, age 86, of Laurinburg, NC, peacefully departed this life into Heaven on November 1, 2025. Born on July 29, 1939, in Dillon County, SC, she was the eldest of six children born to the late Russell and Velma Hunt.

Shirley was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and lovingly known as “Binkie.” Her family was the heart of her life, and she found immense joy in spending time with those she loved. Her unwavering commitment to her family was evident in countless ways—from daily acts of care like school pickups for her grandchildren to road trips to Virginia Beach just to enjoy a meal at Outback Steakhouse.

She cherished attending church, where she found fellowship, comfort, and strength in God’s word and the presence of her church family. Her faith was an important cornerstone of her life.

In addition to her dedication at home, Shirley worked in textiles at Toastmaster and, after retirement, found joy working alongside her daughters and son-in-law at Rick’s Catering. Her passion for cooking was a defining part of who she was. Shirley began cooking at the young age of nine, standing on a lard bucket beside her father to reach the stove—an early start to a lifelong gift she would pass down through generations. Her love, expressed through the meals she prepared, created lasting memories and a legacy of family members who proudly carry on her culinary traditions.

She is survived by her former husband and lifelong friend, Connie Dunn; her daughters: Peggy Davis (Ricky), Rebecca Stock (Jason), and Shelia Smith. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Tracey Bailey (William), Stacey Walker (Andrew), Heather Jernigan (Jerry), Jimmy Jones (Lydia), and Lauren Smith; her great-grandchildren: Taylor Britt (Steven), Jordan Bailey, Davis Walker, Hailey Jernigan, Drew Walker, and Dixon Walker; and a great-great-grandchild expected soon. Shirley also leaves behind her loving sister, Joyce Lord. Also cherishing her memory is her beloved cousin, Brenda McKenzie, and her devoted nephew, Jeffery Strickland, who held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son Tommy Dunn, two sisters, and two brothers.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Tuesday at 3:00pm at Springfield Church of God, with Pastor David Shoemake officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation 2:00-3:00pm. A private burial will follow the service.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to all friends and loved ones for their support, and a special thank you to the staff at Scotia Village for welcoming Shirley and making her feel like part of a family. Thank you also to Springfield Church of God for loving Shirley and walking alongside our family during this time.

Shirley Hunt Dunn will be remembered for her love, her faith, her food, and her unwavering devotion to her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to her favorite group the Silver Legacies at Springfield Church of God.
