Rufus Smith, age 73 of Laurinburg passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2021.
Rufus was born December 15, 1947 in Scotland County, son of Ruby Smith Douglas. He was the loving husband to JoAnn Lane Smith. He was a Veteran who proudly served in the United States Army, going on in service as a Correctional Officer with the New York Department of Corrections. He served as a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, an avid sports fan, especially the NBA games. Rufus was a true family man who always enjoyed doing for others. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with each of them. A devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will truly be missed.
Rufus is preceded in death by his brother, Michael Smith and sister, Linda Faye Pickwood.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Smith of the home; sons, Keith Smith of Virginia, Rufus R. Smith of Laurinburg; daughters, Kim Y. Smith Lee (Darrell) of Lorton, VA, Andrea N. Smith Walters (Michael) of Jersey City, NJ; mother, Ruby Smith Douglas of Laurinburg; brothers, Jerry Blackmon, Chris Blackmon, both of Whiteville; sisters, Linda Gale Graham of Sanford, Linda Carol Wall of Durham, Brenda Stephens of Whiteville; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and many friends.
A Graveside service with military honors will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2021 in Hillside Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Kenneth Moore. A viewing will be from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel. COVID restrictions require facial masks with social distancing for all services.
