Roy McCook Obituary

Rev. James Roy McCook, Sr., 89, peacefully passed away at his home on March 15, 2024.

Born October 16, 1934, in Cadwell, Georgia, to Joseph Arthur and Marie Christine McCook, Roy married the love of his life at 21 years old, Natalie Carolyn McCook, whom he cherished for 60+ years until her death in 2020. Roy is survived by his 4 children, Guy (Flora) McCook, Diane (Robb) Bolar, Keven (Leigh) McCook, and Karol McCook, as well as his 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

After starting his career with Proctor and Gamble in Macon, Georgia, a mission trip to Haiti with Men for Missions International profoundly impacted the direction of Roy’s life. Following his return, Roy received his certificate of ordination in 1987 from One Mission Society (OMS) after being ordained by the National Church Association of Colombia, South America. He served in the mission field with Carolyn for 28 years starting new churches in Colombia, South America, Florida, and Acapulco, Mexico.

Roy had a servant’s heart and a passion for sharing the word of the Lord. In 1998, Roy and Carolyn moved back to the states to Laurinburg, NC. Over the years, he and Carolyn made Scotland County home and enjoyed the community and friendships they made. Roy served as chaplain for the state prison in Wagram, NC, for a few years and later as the First United Methodist Church Visitation Pastor in Laurinburg. He continued mission work in Africa into his 80s supporting the creation of churches in Burundi and mentoring 11 pastors in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His dedication and commitment to his work had a significant impact on his children and grandchildren who continue to be involved in mission work in the US and abroad.

The family invites all who would like to give their condolences to the visitation at Scotia Village on Friday, March 22, 5-7 p.m., and the memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, in the Morris Morgan Entertainment Center (MMEC) at Scotia Village, 2200 Elm Ave., Laurinburg, NC  28352.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to OMS in memory of Roy and his dedication to spreading God’s word would be appreciated. Make checks payable to One Mission Society, P.O. Box A, Greenwood, IN, 46162-6599, and include Roy McCook Memorial Fund in the memo. Funds will be used to buy Bibles and bicycles for the work in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
