Robert Potter Obituary

Robert Eugene “Sonny” Potter went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, June 2, 2020. He was born April 12, 1937 in Laurinburg, North Carolina to Benjamin and Irene Potter. After graduating high school in 1955, he began serving in the United States Air Force’s 38th Strategic Air Command as an Electronic Technician working with B-47 airplanes.

He received his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, then traveled the world during his active duty years. He spent time at air bases in Mississippi, Savannah and also in the Azores, Morocco, Bermuda and England.

After completing his military service in early 1959, he married the beautiful Carolyn Faye Chavis on June 29, 1959. He began working with the United States Postal Service in 1960 and after a long career, retired in early 1998. Sonny and Carolyn raised their daughter, Jill together and welcomed son-in-law, Greg into their family in January of 1992.

Sonny was a “doer” and had many hobbies and interests. He loved cars, fishing, hunting, and prospecting. He attended services at Hickory Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed regular meals with his crew of fellow “Old Timers” at local diners.

Sonny was preceded in death by an infant twin brother, his parents Irene and Benjamin, and his wife Carolyn.

He is survived by his daughter, Jill Vandaveer (Greg); sister, Linda Potter Smith; grandchildren, Zachary and Caroline and a loving host of family and friends

A private graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2020 in Hillside Memorial Park.
