Richard Dorsey Nethery

Richard Dorsey Nethery, P.E. of Shallotte, NC, formerly from Hixson, TN, passed into glory on Sunday, August 18, 2024. He is now with Jesus, his Lord and Savior. Richard, the firstborn son of Dorsey and Ethel M. Nethery, was born on June 25, 1937, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. While a young boy, Richard was active in the Boy Scouts of America and became an Eagle Scout with two palms. He graduated from RRHS in 1955 and moved to Virginia to attend the apprentice school at what was formerly the Newport News Va. Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.  He graduated from the five-year Electrical Design program in 1960. In 1965, he and his wife left Virginia and moved back to NC so that he could attend North Carolina State University in Raleigh. At the age of 32, Richard graduated with an Electrical Engineering Degree in 1969. He eventually went to work at the Tennessee Valley Authority from which he retired in 2004 after 30 years of service. Richard was a longtime member of Burks United Methodist Church in Hixson, TN where he loved to sing in the chancel choir until his illness.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Dorsey and Ethel M. Nethery, and his stillborn daughter, Jaime Rebecca Nethery.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nina Williams Nethery and his son, Steven P. Nethery (Ami). Other survivors are his only sibling, Bobby R. Nethery (Amanda and special in-laws, Rick Williams (Patricia), Judy W. Howie (Houston), and Carol Williams. There are many nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory as well.

Memorial donations are requested to be made to Burks United Methodist Church, 6433 Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 37343, a Hospice care of your choice, or any other charity of your choosing.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Richard Boles Funeral Service in Laurinburg, NC with burial following at Hillside Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held prior to the services from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
