Nell Proctor McCaskill

September 30, 1927 ~ September 28, 2021 (age 93)

Nell Proctor McCaskill passed away on September 28,2021 at Scotia Village in Laurinburg, N.C.

Born in Rocky Mount, N.C. on September 30, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Irma Bell and John Gray Proctor.

After graduating in 1948 from Meredith College in Raleigh, she became the Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church in Ocala, Fla.  In January 1951, she moved to Laurinburg to become the DCE at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. The young people at that church introduced her to Lloyd McCaskill, who would become her husband of 66 years before his death in late 2020.

Nell McCaskill was a dedicated and devoted wife and mother, and especially loved her role as “Mimi” to her seven grandchildren. She had many interests but volunteering wherever she was needed was what inspired her most.

Over the years, she served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and was an active member of the Student Club of Maxton and the Maxton Woman’s Civic Club. She also served as the chairman of Maxton-to-Maxton 2000 which linked Maxton, N.C. to its sister city Maxton in Scotland. In addition, she was a member of the original steering committee for the development of Scotia Village in Laurinburg.

At First Presbyterian Church in Maxton, she served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, children’s choir director, choir member, Bible study leader, and treasurer of the Presbyterian Women, and several other roles. In 2005, she was given an Honorary Life Membership in the Presbyterian Women organization honoring her faithful service to that group and the church.

In addition to her parents and a brother, she was preceded in death by her eldest son Lloyd Curtis “Curt” McCaskill Jr. and her husband Lloyd Curtis McCaskill, M.D.

She is survived by her brother Steve Proctor (Mag) of Rocky Mount; son Thomas Gray McCaskill (Kim) of Greensboro; daughter Janell McCaskill Hannah (Roger) of Chapel Hill; daughter-in-law Donna Jordan McCaskill of Raleigh; and Sister-in-Law Carlene Willis (Clint) of Laurinburg.

Grandchildren are Jamie McCaskill (Meredith) of Raleigh; Jordan McCaskill Overcash (Brent) of Raleigh; Thomas McCaskill Jr. (Jessica) of Mocksville, N.C.; Taylor McCaskill (Eileen) of Greensboro; Harrison McCaskill (Chelsea) of Charlotte; John Hannah of Atlanta; and Clint Hannah and his fiancée Chantal Lopez of New York. She also leaves a legacy of six great grandchildren.

The family would also like to thank the kind and caring staff at Scotia Village for the excellent care they provided her over the years.
