Mildred Janet Yongue Obituary

Mildred “Millie” Yongue, age 86, passed away on March 21, 2025 at Scotia Village after a brave battle with dementia.  She was born at home in Abner, NC on September 7, 1938, to the late William Keplar Hurley and Margaret “Maggie” Janet Trogdon Hurley.  Millie was preceded in death by husband of 57 years Douglas Yates Yongue, and her brothers Paul, Gene, James, Noel and Wayne Hurley.  She is survived by son Douglas Yongue, Jr., and wife Stacey of Laurinburg, NC, daughter Beth Yongue and husband Jim Knight of Raleigh, NC, brother Phillip Hurley and wife Brenda of Abner, NC, sister-in-law Ann Hurley of Lancaster, SC and numerous nieces and nephews.

Millie graduated from Troy High School at age 16, then earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Pfeiffer College.  She taught French for many years.  Millie was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Laurinburg, NC.  In addition to her church, she was very active in the Scotland County Democratic Women, Scotland County Genealogy Society, tennis leagues, book club and bridge clubs.

A very talented gardener, she found great joy in cultivating roses, summer vegetable gardens and her greenhouse full of orchids.  Millie excelled at many crafts including sewing, knitting, basket weaving, crochet and needle point.  An avid collector of sea shells, she spent many hours wading in the surf of Ocean Isle Beach looking for the ocean’s treasures.

The Yongue family would like to express sincere gratitude to the health care professionals at Carolina Hearts and Scotia Village Retirement Community who provided excellent care for Millie during her years of declining health.
