Marianne Kolshorn Miller, 88, passed away Monday, October 21, 2019. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 25, 1931 to Henry and Mary Kolshorn. During Marianne's younger years, she, her brother, and parents lived in a variety of states, due to her father's military service and career.
She graduated from Belton High School, Missouri, where she met her high school sweetheart, Howard L. Miller. She attended the University of Missouri and in 1952, Howard and Marianne were married in Belton.
Due to her husband's employment, the couple lived in various locations around the United States. Marianne stayed busy rearing their four children, volunteering with the schools and area activities. As the family grew, she ventured into the business world. Over the years, Marianne was a speech therapist, owner of a personnel employment service, director of hospital volunteers, and owner &manager of a storage business. She served for several years as a Child Advocate with Guardian Ad Litem of Scotland County. But, her favorite business adventure was being the owner and manager of Hogan's Ice Cream. There, she was delighted to bring smiles and laughter to people of all ages, especially the little ones.
Marianne was a serious golfer for many years. She would always find time to be on the golf course with friends or family. She was equally fond of playing the game of bridge and enjoyed her numerous bridge clubs. She took joy in gardening and could be found on her hands and knees planting vinca or religiously pulling weeds.
Being a grandmother was her greatest joy. She loved hosting sleepovers and manicure parties. Playing dress-up at “Grandmama”/”Grandma”/”Tam-Ma's” house was a favorite of her grands.
She loved to use her sewing talent to make clothes, wall hangings, and quilts for her children and grandchildren. In addition, she loved to knit and create various needlework designs. Her cooking skills for many family gatherings were always appreciated, especially her pot roast, chocolate ice box cake, and chocolate brownies.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Henry, Jr., her son, Chris, her former husband, Howard, and two great-grandchildren, Aria Pulley and Grace Miller. She is survived by her children, Scott (Anne) of Laurinburg, North Carolina; Neal (Julie) of Springfield, Illinois; Leanne Harte of Southern Pines, North Carolina and daughter-in-law Maureen Ferguson of Northbrook, Illinois; her grandchildren Scottie Miller, Holland (Arthur) Pulley, John (Whitney) Miller, Heather Miller, Rachel (Conrad) Eisen, Bradley Miller and Victoria Harte; her great granddaughters Elle Pulley and Holden Miller; her sister-in-law, Rose Mary Taylor; niece Chris Ramirez, and several other family members.
