Margaret Alice Rebecca "Peggy" Pond Anderson

Margaret Alice Rebecca Pond Anderson (Peggy) was born on June 24,1942 and went to her heavenly home on May 14, 2026.

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia to William Fulmer Pond and Margaret Mathews Pond, she graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1960, went on a Grand Tour of Europe in the summer of 1962, and earned a BA from Longwood College in 1963. In 1976, she earned a Master of Arts from Old Dominion University. She loved to go jogging and used the time to memorize scripture; by 1985 she had memorized Psalm 119 in its entirety. A long-time lover of learning, she worked at the Cross Lanes and Dunbar Public Libraries in West Virginia and on two college campuses: West Virginia State University at Institute and St. Andrews College/University in Laurinburg, North Carolina.

Peggy married David Anderson in 1964 and became a minister’s wife on the Eastern Shore of Virginia where they had their first child, Margaret Kate (Meg). Their two sons, Christian David and John Samuel, were born in Virginia Beach. Later, the family moved to Cross Lanes, West Virginia, and, in 2000, Peggy and Christian moved to Laurinburg, North Carolina.

Peggy was a published poet, a novel writer, a public speaker, and an avid reader. Her poetry has been published in multiple literary magazines, and she has a portfolio of over 100 pieces, including an unpublished novel.  In 1980, she was invited to present her Master’s thesis at Hofstra University in New York. Her love of reading and writing helped her earn both the degree and the recognition—her modest demeanor covered a massive intellect. She was a Sunday School teacher at various times, always sharing her wisdom and understanding in the most helpful and least judgmental of ways.

An avid homemaker, Peggy was the most happy when she was busy in her home.  She always cooked breakfast and made lunches for her kids during the school year, “prayed” them out the door every morning of their lives, and took pride in homecooked meals for everyone every day. She enjoyed spending time outside birdwatching, weeding her vegetable and flower gardens, and just enjoying the sunshine and the beauty of God’s natural creations.  Her biggest love, however, was the ocean—she never missed an opportunity to go to the beach and put her toes in the sand (as long as it didn’t interrupt the Young and the Restless)!

“Mrs. Peggy” loved to give back to her community, whether it was participation in PTA or the Block Mother program or volunteering with the local election board or advocating her Pro-Life beliefs in local and national marches, the idea of helping the community thrive without having to be in the spotlight was right up her alley. For many years an avid NASCAR fan with a large collection of Darryl Waltrip t-shirts, she and Christian spent many hours at the North Wilkesboro Motor Speedway cheering on their #11.

She was a dedicated Christian, beginning her spiritual life at Port Norfolk Baptist Church and then, on becoming a minister’s wife, joining the Presbyterian Church USA, the denomination in which she spent the rest of her life. At the time of her passing, she has been a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg for 26 years, where she also served as an elder. 

She believed with her whole mind, soul, and body “in God the Father Almighty, the maker of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son,” and so we know that she has gone to reap her reward with her Lord and Savior and that we will all see her again.

She is survived by her three children, son-in-law Allen Johnson, daughter-in-law Andrea Anderson, her sister, Trudy Smith (David), sisters-in-Law Ellen Hill and Julia Wilson (Gene), 4 nieces and 3 nephews, and 7 grandchildren.

A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 30, at 2:00 p.m.   The family will have a time of visitation prior to the service beginning at 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.       A graveside memorial will be held next month in Virginia.
