Lois "Peggy" Deese Strickland

Lois “Peggy” Deese Strickland, of Rowland, North Carolina, entered into Heaven’s glory on May 16, 2026.  Born on July 6, 1951, Peggy lived a life devoted to her family, her work, and the many people whose lives she touched through her kindness and caring spirit. Her devotion to Jesus was the foundation of her life. Through every joy and every hardship, her faith never wavered. She loved the Lord with all her heart, and her testimony was shown in the way she cared and encouraged others.

Peggy, as she was lovingly known by most who knew her, dedicated 35 years of service to the Public Schools of Robeson County. She began her career as a teacher assistant at Union Elementary School and later became the school’s secretary/bookkeeper. Throughout her years there, Peggy formed lasting friendships and was known for her strong work ethic, warm heart, and willingness to help others. Until her last days, Peggy could remember many of the former Union Eagles and proudly kept up with their accomplishments throughout the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Romuel Strickland; her parents, Haynes and Virgie Deese; her sisters, Lillian D. Brewington and Linda D. Oxendine; and her brother, Haynes Deese, Jr. 

Peggy is survived by a special nephew, Justin Kale Oxendine of Hoffman, North Carolina, whom she lovingly helped raise following the death of his parents. She is also survived by his wife, Tasha, and their children, Malachi and Cora, who lovingly called her “Nonna.” 

She is also survived by a sister, Valarie Deese, a brother, Harry Deese, and a sister-in-law, Verdia Deese, all of Rowland. Peggy leaves behind cherished nieces: Carlita (Bronford) Lowry, Beth Deese, Lindsey (Chris) Rhyne, Michelle Brock (Jonathan), Tristian (CJ) Noiseux, Harleigh Brewington, Kasey (Aaron) Murdock, Alannah Locklear, and Alyssa Hammonds. She also treasured her nephews:  Ray (Donna) Brewington, Michael (Katey) Brewington, Blake (Kara) Oxendine, and Joshua Oxendine. Many of them lovingly competed for the title of “Aunt Peggy’s Favorite,” a testament to the special bond she shared with each of them.  

Peggy is also survived by her beloved great-great nieces and nephews: Brooklyn, Bayleigh, Damien, Jeremy, Brylan, Cedric Reid, Lillian Rose, Ricky, and Juliette. In Peggy’s eyes, they were in a class all by themselves and brought immense joy and love to her life.

Peggy will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, her devotion to family, and the lasting impact she made on those fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Richard Boles Funeral Service. 

The funeral service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20th at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel followed by burial in the Lumbee Memorial Garden.
