John Richard Herring, Jr., son of the late John Richard Herring Sr., and Louise Gibson Wallace, passed away September 21,2024 at the age of 86 of cancer. His last days were spent at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg, NC.
John Richard was born August 16, 1938 in Cheraw, South Carolina. John Richard is survived by his wife, Margaret, his daughter, Melanie Herring of Nashville TN, special cousin Lula Mae Holt of Hope Mills and several cousins, nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother James Edward Herring
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and National Guard. He was active in Emmaus, his church, a member of the Kiwanis Club and served on the board of Hamlet Federal Credit Union.
John Richard retired from Delta Mills Marketing after 40 years of service where he worked in textile management. He also worked for several years after retirement at Ine’s Lodge Golf Course. He volunteered at Scotland Memorial Hospital and the Dulin Center for over 18 years. When he was not busy volunteering, you could find him reading his bible and studying his Sunday school lesson.
He was active at First Baptist Church of Laurinburg, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday School Teacher and church bus driver, also serving on various other committees for the church. In his spare time, he loved restoring classic cars, deep sea fishing, going to NASCAR races, spearheading fish fry’s for his neighbors as well as playing golf.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24th at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel. Visitation with the family will follow the service at the funeral home.
