John Peele Weeks of Laurinburg, N.C. passed away peacefully after a short and hard-fought battle with cancer.  Johnny was born August 29, 1956, the son of Betty Jean and Cecil Weeks.  He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Maxton High School, where he was an all-conference quarterback and pitcher.

Johnny was steadfast in his beliefs, yet quietly went about his way around others.  He loved his family more than anything. His most cherished memories were times spent sharing sporting events with his children.  He loved trains from an early age and had a 43-year career as a locomotive engineer with CSX Transportation in Hamlet, NC.  The camaraderie and friendships with his fellow trainmen added immensely to his career satisfaction.

Johnny’s passion for the Green Bay Packers made him their biggest fan.  He was loyal to his team beginning in the 1960s and never swayed.  He especially enjoyed watching the games with his children.

Johnny was predeceased by his mother and grandparents, Evelyn and Glenn Cottingham.  Left to cherish his memory are his wife, JoEllen, daughter Emily of Washington DC, son Andrew of Greensboro, father Cecil Weeks of Laurinburg, sisters Dawn Weeks of Laurinburg and Deb Liles of Chapel Hill, nieces Wendy Driggers of Laurinburg and Jenna Miller of Chapel Hill, nephews Clint Blackburn of Loris, SC and JR Driggers of Hamer, SC, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

The family wishes to thank his caregivers at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Trellis Supportive Care of Winston Salem.  A private memorial service for the family will be held at Richard Boles Funeral Home in Laurinburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NC Transportation Museum Foundation, where Johnny volunteered as an engineer during his retirement.  Donations in his memory may be mailed to 411 South Salisbury Avenue, Spencer, NC  28159.
