Mr. John Alton Carpenter, Jr., of Laurinburg, loving father and grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend departed this life at the age of 91 on June 30, 2025.
He was born February 25, 1934 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, son of the late John Alton Carpenter Sr., and the late Lillie Ruth Beam Carpenter. He proudly served as a member of the United States Army and the North Carolina National Guard. John was a valued employee of the Dixie-Guano Fertilizer Company where he worked as a General Manager for many years until retiring. He was well known and very active in his community. John was a member of the Republican Party of Scotland, Director of the Red Cross, The Lion's Club and served on the Board of Elections. He also enjoyed his time being the activity bus and van driver for Scotia Village. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family. John’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to have known and loved him.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his adored wife of 69 years, Dorothy Rose Abernethy Carpenter.
Left to cherish his memory are sons, Joe Carpenter (Cindy) of Laurinburg, Dan Carpenter (Catherine) of San Diego, CA; brothers, Jack Carpenter (Eleanor) of Raleigh, Gene Carpenter of Granite Falls, Pat Carpenter (Sally) of Anderson, SC; his adored grandchildren, Meagan Carpenter-Dial (Clifton), Joseph Alton Carpenter (Ashleigh), John Daniel Carpenter, Jr.; great grandchildren, Katelin Woodall, Vedah Rose Dial, Jude Henley Dial, and John Abel Dial; along with his loving extended family and many friends.
The memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter will be held Saturday, July 19, 2025 at their home church of Bethlehem Community Church in Cherryville, NC. The family will share time with a meal prior to the service beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
