Jerry Wayne Johnson, son of the late Hughie Clyde Johnson and Edna Mae Shepherd Johnson was born on August 10, 1948 in Marlboro County, South Carolina. Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Army, enduring 2 tours in Vietnam, serving in the 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and numerous other citations. He retired from Pilkington / LOF Glass after 26 years of service. He attended Central United Methodist Church in Laurinburg.
Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who loved trapping, hunting, and fishing. He loved animals, from his quarter horses to his precious parakeets, and everything in between. He was an avid reader on many subjects and enjoyed watching reruns of old westerns. Another favorite of his was antiques and attending auctions. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and will always be remembered as a devoted and supportive husband, father, PawPaw, brother, uncle, and friend. Jerry passed peacefully on May 7, 2022 after an extended illness at his home in Laurel Hill.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Mitchell Johnson and Ken Johnson.
He leaves behind his adoring wife of 49 years, Darlene Yates Johnson of the home; daughters, Dr. Alicia Johnson Franks (Ret. Lt. Colonel Barry Franks) of Clanton, AL and Jerri Johnson McArthur (Brent) of Maxton; grandsons, Aaron and Colby Franks of Clanton, AL, along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel, officiated by Rev. Bobby Dean. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at the funeral home.
