Hazel Owens Carnes, age 90 of Laurinburg passed away to her Heavenly home Sunday, January 10, 2021.
Hazel was born September 28, 1929 in Robeson County, daughter of the late Robert Wesley Owens and Susan Irene Pittman Owens. She was the devoted wife to the late Ned Lewis Carnes, Sr. She retired after twenty-two years of service from Harris Teeter. Hazel was a member of New Hope Baptist Church where she served with the “In As Much Program”, helping to fill bags for needy children. She also enjoyed visiting shut-ins, exercise and yard work. Her greatest joy was cooking for her family and spending time with them. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son, Lewis Carnes; brothers, Wilber Owens, Jasper Owens, David Owens, Bobby Owens and sister, Lois Elkins.
Hazel is survived by her son, George “David” Carnes (Stacie) of Sanford; brother, Maurice “Buck” Owens; sisters, Grace McDonald, Carolyn Stone, Rachel Everitte, Mabel Osborne; grandchildren, Ashley Locklear (Marcus), Nathan Carnes, Nicholas Carnes, great grandchild, Brenden Locklear; Lewis’ special friend, Debbie Albright, along with her many nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be given to New Hope Baptist Church, 11480 Hasty Road, Laurinburg, NC 28352.
A Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2021 in the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel, officiated by Pastor Woody Byrd. The family will receive friends following the service with COVID restrictions of facial masks, social distancing with limited attendance at all services.
