Dwight Eugene "Gene" McGee

Dwight Eugene "Gene" McGee, age 83, of Laurel Hill, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2026.

Born on August 4, 1942, in Hickory County, Missouri, he was the son of the late Daniel and Mildred McGee. Gene graduated as the valedictorian of his high school class. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. After his military service, Gene embarked on a lifelong career as a long-distance truck driver, a profession that carried him across many miles until his well-deserved retirement.

A devoted father, Gene loved his family deeply. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Catherine Kelly McGee; his parents; his sister, Doris Ward; and his brothers, Jim McGee and Charles Roy McGee.

He leaves behind his three children: one son, Brad McGee and wife Crissy of Laurel Hill; his daughters, Dana McGee of the home, and Gail McGee Keith and husband Barry of Hope Mills, NC; and his grandson, Noah Keith of New Mexico. He also leaves behind his faithful canine companions and napping buddies, Blue and Luka.

Gene was a man of simple pleasures who enjoyed watching NASCAR, wrestling, western movies, or challenging his mind with sudoku puzzles. He also enjoyed attending gospel concerts with his friend of over 50 years, Merle Etheridge of Columbus, Georgia.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at Laurinburg Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service on Tuesday beginning at 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at Richard Boles Funeral Service. 

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Scotland Regional Hospice for the exceptional care, comfort, and compassion shown to Gene and his family over the past few weeks, whose staff truly became like part of the family.
