Durant Cooper Obituary

Durant Cooper of Maxton passed away at the age of 80 on Friday, March 20, 2026.

He was born February 10, 1946 in Scotland County, North Carolina, loving son of the late Sparks Cooper and the late Annah Mae Lowery Cooper. Durant was a valued employee of WestPoint Stevens Inc., formerly J.P. Stevens working as a mechanic until retiring. He loved the Lord and served as a faithful member of Youth for Christ Holiness Church in Maxton.

Durant was an avid sports fan who loved the thrill of the game, especially baseball, softball, or a round of golf on his favorite course. He loved any opportunity he had to cheer on his favorite North Carolina State Wolfpack. He was also a racing enthusiast who enjoyed drag racing and horse races.  Durant also enjoyed using his talent for working on cars. Above all, he cherished time spent with family and the memories they shared. Durant will be dearly missed and remembered as an all-around great guy who loved his family and friends deeply.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by brother, Bobby Cooper; and sister, Mae Frances Chavis.

Left to rejoice in his memory is his adored wife, Peggy Locklear Cooper of the home; son, Patrick McMillian of Lumberton; daughters, Stephanie C. Strickland (Johnny), Deborah Cooper (Johnny Clark), Tara Cooper (Lee Colson, Sr.), Carolyn Tracy Cooper (Carlis Bryant Jr.) all of Maxton; brothers, Harvey Cooper of Pembroke, William Cooper of Maxton, Jeffery Cooper of Wagram; sisters, Valerie Chavis, Linda Chavis, Diane Bullard each of Maxton, Daffine Cooper of Laurinburg; grandchildren, John Cody Strickland (Kianna), Alayse Bell, Megan Scott (Jonathan), Whitney Jacobs (Adam), Dylan Strickland, Thomas Bell (Hunter), Carolyn Locklear, Brylee Clark, Lee Colson, Jr., Patrick Delance McMillian, Trenton Keith McMillian, Johnathan Russell McMillian; and sixteen great-grandchildren; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.
