Donald "Donnie" Eugene Powell

Donald “Donnie” Eugene Powell departed this life for his Heavenly home at the age of 60 on January 29, 2025.

Donnie was the loving son of the late Paul Henry Powell and the late Carolyn Hyatt Powell, born November 7, 1964 in Dillon County, SC. He was raised in Laurinburg, NC and graduated from Scotland High School in 1983.  Donnie was active with Union Chapel Pentecostal Church in Supply, NC, before his health declined. He was a proud United States Navy Veteran serving on the USS Robison (DDG-12) for 2 WestPac cruises receiving the Good Conduct Award. During his enlistment, he was able to tour 16 countries, Hawaii 13 times, while serving as boiler technician, and member of the Search and Rescue team. Donnie also served as a member of the American Legion Post #50 and the American Legion Riders.

Following his honorable discharge from the military, Donnie began his career in the school system serving for many dedicated years as an educator along with coaching baseball and semi pro football. He was a proud member of seven national and international baseball umpiring associations, the SAOA and NCHSAA for baseball and football, Cape Fear Official Association, and Atlantic Coast Umpiring Association. He truly enjoyed his 24 years of coaching and 40 years of umpiring.

Donnie’s greatest joy came from time spent with his family and the memories they were able to share. Most of all, he loved God saying “I am one of the most blessed persons ever lived”. Donnie will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.

He is survived by brothers, Paul Powell of Marion, SC, and Kenneth Ray Powell (Roxanne) of Shallotte, NC; sister, Lesa Powell Matthews (Lee) of Maxton, NC; adored nieces and nephews, Kelly Nicole Hunt, Christopher Paul Coleman, Kenneth Ray Powell, Jr., Joshua Powell, Matthew Powell, and Timothy Powell; along with many loving extended family and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.   Visitation will be held prior to services on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
