Dennis Avery O'Brien, Jr.

Our beloved, Dennis Avery O’Brien, Jr., of Laurinburg, NC departed this life for his Heavenly home at the age of 78 on January 12, 2025.

He was the loving son of the late Dennis A. O’Brien and the late Myrtle Hancock O’Brien, born October 25, 1946 in Rockingham, NC. In March 1967, Dennis married the love of his life, Judy Newton O’Brien and together they shared a beautiful life together. He was a Veteran of the North Carolina National Guard. Dennis was a longtime valued employee with Spartan Nash for thirty-eight years until his retirement.

He served as a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he loved participating in the Men’s Ministry with cherished memories of the placing of basketball goals to area youth, along with Christian fellowship with his church family. Dennis enjoyed trips to the beach, his annual fishing trip to Santee Cooper, and loved cutting grass at both home and church. He was an avid sports fan, especially Duke Basketball, Scotland High School football, and above all, cheering on his grandson, Fisher, at his baseball games, and his granddaughter, Avery at horse shows. Dennis loved his family most of all and cherished his time shared with each one of them. He will be greatly missed and remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, adored brother, and friend.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by son, Dennis Mark O’Brien.

Left to cherish his memory is wife of 57 years, Judy O’Brien of the home; his son, Dennis “Denny” Avery O’Brien, III and wife, Ashley, and his adored grandchildren, Fisher Mills O’Brien and Avery Jane O’Brien of Zebulon; brothers, Danny O’Brien and David O’Brien both of Lancaster, SC; along with a host of loving extended family and many devoted friends.

The funeral service will be held 6:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, January 16, 2025 at New Hope Baptist Church.  A time of visitation will be prior to the service on Thursday beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church.

A private burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
