Christine Monroe Obituary

Mrs. Christine DeVane Monroe, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister and devoted friend passed away at the age of 96 on November 7, 2024.

Christine was born October 6, 1928 in Lumberton, NC, daughter of the late William Walter DeVane and the late Vara Shaw DeVane.  She was the loving and devoted wife to the late Hartwell Gary Monroe whom she shared many happy years until his passing.  Along with being a homemaker and wonderful mother, Christine had a long career as a Dietary Manager in the public school system until retiring.  She faithfully served as a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Maxton.  She was also a member the Eastern Star, Ladies Garden Club and served as a volunteer with Scotland Regional Hospice.  Many named Christine a professional baker as she loved baking her delicious cakes for everyone to share.  She was also an avid fan of the Duke Blue Devils, Duke blue all the way.  Christine will be remembered for her love and devotion to her family, her church and community.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Monroe Wallace; and sister, Eloise DeVane Allen.

Mrs. Monroe is survived by her sons, William “Bill” Gary Monroe, Sr., of Maxton, and Hartwell “David” Monroe of Sumter, SC; sister, Betty Jean DeVane Covington of Virginia; grandchildren, Wendy Wallace, Wade “Pee Wee” Wallace Jr., Amanda “Mandy” Lynn Monroe Peters, William “Will” Gary Monroe, Jr., Mason Monroe, Mary Monroe; great grandchildren, MaryBeth Wallace Bullard, Shaley Ann Wallace, Hunter Paul Austin and Rorey Hardie; great-great grandchildren, Ma'Kiah Bullard and My'Kel Bullard; along with her nieces, nephews, church family and devoted friends.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, November 10th at Richard Boles Funeral Service.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11th at the First Baptist Church of Maxton officiated by Rev. Justin Walters and Rev. Carl Redding.  Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.  

The family requests in lieu of flowers for donations to be given to the First Baptist Church of Maxton, 107 N. Florence Street, Maxton, NC 28364.
