Charles Mullins Obituary

Charles Edward Mullins, age 84, passed away peacefully on July 29th surrounded by family.

Charles was born to Leon and Dorothy Mullins in St. Albans, West Virginia. After graduating from St. Albans High School, he went on to West Virginia Tech, then to Officers Candidate School and a career in the US Navy from 1962 to 1969. Lieutenant Mullins served on the USS Pawcatuck, the USS Stickle and as the Weapons Officer on the destroyer USS Johnston during the Tet Offensive of the Vietnam War.

After resigning his commission in 1969, Charles and his wife Madora and two children Matt and Anne moved to Laurinburg, NC where he worked for Rea Magnet Wire. He then accepted an offer with Scottish Food Systems, a franchisee company with KFC and Pizza Inn restaurants in North and South Carolina. He started as restaurant manager and quickly worked his way up to Vice President of Operations, then in 1985 was named President and CEO. Mullins not only managed the company but served on many national KFC and Pizza Inn boards and committees, securing the company's reputation as a leader in restaurant management until his retirement in 2007.

Charles loved and served his community as a member of the School Board, Laurinburg Jaycee’s and Rotary Club.   He faithfully served as a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir.  He loved music, singing and proudly sang in a quartet in college.

Charles was an avid Golfer, enjoyed traveling with Madora, loved peaches and home-grown tomatoes.

Above all of this was his love for his family and his genuine interest in people whether friends, work colleagues, or strangers. He wanted to know you and your story, and he wanted to share his. If you had the pleasure of knowing Charlie, then you also knew all about his children and grandchildren.

Charlie is survived by his loving family, wife, Madora McClure Mullins; his children, Matt Mullins and his wife Angie Mullins of Duncan, South Carolina, Anne Mullins Gallion and her husband Frank Gallion of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Regina Veillet Peterson and her husband Eric Peterson of Portland, Oregon; his grandchildren, Zoe Mullins, Matthew Mullins Jr., Charlie Gallion, Effie Gallion, Christian Veillet, Gabrielle Veillet.   He was preceded in death by parents, Leon and Dorotha Mullins, and his brother, David Mullins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given in Charlie’s memory to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 13000 Blues Farm Road, Laurinburg, NC  28352
