Charles David Maurice, 72, passed away in his home at Twin Harbors in Mt. Gilead, NC on March 14, 2026. Charles was born in Laurinburg, NC on December 21, 1953 to the late Joseph Franklin and Ruth Mabry Maurice. Very soon after Charles was born, the family moved to Hamlet, NC, where Charles attended Hamlet schools and graduated from Hamlet High School in 1972.
Charles met and overcame many challenges throughout his lifetime. It was always his desire not to be defined by his physical limitations, but by what he accomplished, even with those limitations. Charles took courses at East Carolina University in Metal Art and Design and worked in fabrication and design of jewelry for a number of years until his physical limitations prevented continuation of this work. Charles was also a great lover of animals, especially the many cats and dogs that were his companions through the years.
Charles is survived by a sister, Martha Jo Maurice Hitt and husband, Bill of Hamlet, NC; nephew, David Hitt and wife, Stefanie, and two great nieces, Ella and Emma Hitt, all of Helena, MT; and nephew, William Hitt and wife, Jeanne of Wendell, NC. Charles is also survived by his dear friend, Ella Mae Hubbard, and her family of Wallace, SC.
A private family graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.
