Catherine McLaurin Obituary

Catherine Quick McLaurin, (86) of Laurinburg, NC passed away peacefully at Morrison Manor on October 17th, 2024. Catherine was born in Marlboro County, SC on December 4th, 1937 to Fred and Victoria Quick of Bennettsville, SC. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Freida Q. Parker (Lewis) of Carmel, Indiana. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, H. F. “Penny” McLaurin of Laurinburg, as well as their two sons, Henry F. “Mac” McLaurin Jr. (Catherine Smith) of McColl, SC, and Boyd McLaurin (Sharlene Patterson) of Laurinburg. She will forever be “Granny” to the apples of her eye, her adored granddaughters Dr. Katie McLaurin (Andrew Harrill) of Greenville, SC, Gibson McLaurin of Laurinburg, Laney McLaurin of Monroe, NC, Sarah Beth McLaurin and Sumner McLaurin of McColl, SC.  She also leaves a beloved family friend, Geneva Austin, and her precious companion Schnauzer, Sophie.

Catherine graduated from Limestone College where she studied music and elementary education. She went on to pursue her love of children, teaching in Danville, VA, Scotland County, and at Marlboro Academy.  After her retirement from teaching she worked alongside her husband in their business, Farmland Ag. Services.

She was a member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church where she served on various committees as well as serving as an Elder and a Deacon and singing with the choir.  Countless hours were spent with many dear friends around Bridge tables not only playing Bridge but also solving all of the world’s problems.  Hospice of Scotland County was very special to Catherine and she donated many hours fundraising and acting as a volunteer for them.  In 2021 she was awarded the first-ever Emma McInnis Award for Exceptional Volunteer.

Catherine loved traveling, spending time at their home in Ocean Isle Beach, shopping, and spending time with her family and friends.  She particularly loved being able to watch her granddaughters do the things that they loved.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 22 at 2:00 pm at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 in the Fellowship Hall prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Scotland Regional Hospice, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353 or Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, 600 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28352.
