Carol Hammonds Obituary

Carol Sue Locklear Hammonds, age 61 of Maxton, NC transitioned to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 4, 2024 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on June 10, 1962, loving and devoted daughter of the late John Archie and Betty Lois Locklear.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Luther and Retha Mae Jacobs; paternal grandparents Huey and Callie Locklear; three aunts, Letha Mae Harris, Rachael Jacobs and Edith Jacobs; five uncles Vardell (Purcell) Jacobs, P.H. Locklear, Thurman Locklear, Sandy Oxendine, and Rev. Hartford Harris.

Carol Sue was the backbone of our family. She was the third oldest of seven children. She lived next door to her parents to ensure she could take care of them and her sons. She loved hard and had a giving heart. If she heard of anyone being in need, she was always the first to give. She was an awesome mother, wife, daughter, grandmother, sister and aunt. She was our family’s Sil Billy, Barney Fife, lawyer and definitely our rare jewel. She was always up for a challenge and an adventure. She loved to fish, go camping, make crafts and spend time with her family. She would spend her last dime if she had to, if needed to support a Midway family function. To her, there was nothing like family gatherings in Midway! Truly Midway will never be the same. We know momma and daddy rejoiced when they saw her at the gates of Heaven. It’s amazing how the one that was always there for them is the first one to be reunited with them. Cancer didn’t win, it didn’t take her out, God just said it was time. Wow, God always has a plan!

Carol graduated from Rowland High School in 1980. She worked at several companies including, Converse, JP Stevens, Sara Lee and Nash Finch. She continued her education and graduated from Richmond Community College and earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice which led to her career at the NC Department of Corrections. She devoted 14 selfless years up until she became ill. She took pride in her job, which made it hard for her to depart. She loved and cherished her career. She lived what the Bible stated in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. Her work ethic demonstrated that she never wanted or asked for a handout. She worked hard to provide for her parents, her boys and her family.

She leaves to cherish her wonderful memories, her husband of 23 years Jerome Hammonds; two sons, Jason (Angela) Locklear and Rev. Brian Keith Locklear, five sisters Helen Locklear of Maxton, Gail (Rev. Larry) Oxendine of Rowland, Mary Locklear of Maxton, Annette (Patrick) Locklear of Shannon, and Melissa (John) Bullard of Maxton and one brother Ander (Pap) Locklear of Maxton; Three grandchildren Isaiah Locklear, Ikiah Locklear and Jacob Locklear; one great-grandchild Delilah Faye Locklear; two aunts Karby Lane Locklear of Rowland and Annie Lois Oxendine of Maxton and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
