Betty “Joyce” Reece Braswell was born April 11, 1935 in Laurinburg, North Carolina, daughter of the late Houston Currie Reece and Lonnie Mae Cox Reece. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Samuel Braswell on March 25, 2009; by her sisters, Jean Brady, Eloise Byrd, Essie McGirt, Vinnie Marconi; brothers, Arwood Hamond, Bobby Reece, and H.C. Reece, Jr.
Joyce worked for the Laurinburg Milling Company for thirty-three years, then was in business with her husband at G & M Outlet until retiring.
Her favorite TV program was The Andy Griffith Show. She had the pleasure of meeting characters from the show – Howard Morris (Ernest T. Bass), Jack Prince (Rafe Hollister), Aneta Cousart (Helen Crump), Everette Greenbaum (Writer), The Darlings (The Dillards).
She was most interested in genealogy and family history. She belonged to several societies in Scotland County, Marlboro County, Marion County, Robeson County, and Yadkin County. She helped with publishing Scotland County Heritage and Robeson County Heritage.
She was a former member of Stewartsville Baptist Church and a current member of the East Laurinburg Baptist Church.
Joyce is survived by her son, Jerry Braswell (Betty), granddaughters, Aimee Chance, Casey Strait, Tracie Leviner; grandson, Dustin Braswell; eleven great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews and many loving friends.
Her services will be held at graveside 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2022 in Hillside Memorial Park officiated by Rev. Richard Tyson. The family will have a time of visitation prior to the service from 3:00 until 3:45 p.m. at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
Joyce requested memorial donations to be given to the East Laurinburg Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1846, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
