Benford "Curtis" Herring Obituary

Benford Curtis Herring of McColl, South Carolina, passed away on July 14, 2025.

Curtis was born on March 5, 1961, the loving son of the late Sammie Archie Herring, Sr., and Thelma Rogers Herring. After graduating from McColl High School, he attended Chesterfield/Marlboro Technical College. He enlisted in the Army and served in Korea and Central America on a Navy ship and qualified as a shellback. Curtis was also a certified scuba diver. After serving his country for 8 years, he owned several businesses before working at INA Bearing in Cheraw, SC for over 33 years retiring in 2024. Curtis and his wife, Teresa had a passion for traveling in their motorhome. He enjoyed watching and attending stock car racing of all types. Clemson University was his favorite sports team, he especially loved to attend softball games, and they held many family reunions with his brothers, grandson, and their families there. He also loved beach music and could be seen anywhere shagging the night away.

He is a member of the American Legion Post 60 of McColl and was a past baseball manager for their baseball teams. Curtis enjoyed seeing the young men fulfill their potential on and off the field. He was also a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans Marlboro Camp 835, holding the office of Commander at the Col. E.T. Stackhouse Camp 1576, and a member of the Marlboro Lodge 88 AFM. He loved the brotherhood that these organizations embodied. Curtis’ greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Teresa Cheek Herring of the home; son, Jeremy Polston (Erin) of Bennettsville, SC; brothers, Archie Herring (Shelia) of Gibson, Tony Herring (Jennifer) of Simpsonville, SC; grandchildren whom Curtis cherished, Caleb, Maddie, and Will Polston of Bennettsville, SC; and fur babies, Zack and Zoey; along with extended family and friends.
