Aubrey L. "Buddy" Nelson

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Aubrey L. Nelson known to most as Buddy on March 12, 2026 at the age of 91 after an extended illness.  He was at home surrounded by his wife and children.  Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama he lived a life of quiet wisdom and dedication to his loving family.

Buddy had many passions but a particular love for hunting and fishing.  Each season he enjoyed planting and cultivating his garden. No weeds were allowed and he loved sharing each harvest with friends.

He graduated from Murphy high school in 1952 in Mobile, Alabama.  Buddy was employed at the Bureau of Surveys and Plans with the Alabama State highway Department for 15 years.  

After being hired by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, in 1967 he moved with his family to Wagram, North Carolina. He earned his professional engineer license in 1981 and served as resident engineer for the eighth district until his retirement. During this time, he supervised the construction of many highways locally as well in surrounding counties.

Buddy is survived by his adoring wife, Sylvia Gaston Nelson, his son Jimmy (Tricia) of Smithfield, North Carolina, two daughters Gwyn Moore (Mike) of Florence, Kentucky, Crystal McInnis (Mac) of Laurinburg, North Carolina, grandchildren Adam Gabzdyl, Grant Gabzdyl, Molly Gabzdyl, Matthew Nelson, Hunter McInnis, and two great grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 4 PM at Spring Hill Baptist Church, 24220 Main St., Wagram, NC 28396. The family will receive visitors beginning at 3 PM at the church.
