Rev. Laurin James “L.J.” Young, age 86 of Laurinburg passed to his Heavenly home on Friday, November 29, 2019.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 2, 2019 at the Maxton Fresh Manna Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Laurinburg Memorial Park.
Born March 18, 1933 in Florence County, South Carolina, L.J. was one of ten children of the late Hubert Eugene Young and Fannie “Orie” Bingham Young. He was a Veteran who proudly served in the United States Army and a faithful servant of God in ministry for more than 56 years. He was ordained by God in the ministry by the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. During his many years of service, Rev. Young ministered in the Maxton Pentecostal Holiness Church, Little Lamb Pentecostal Holiness Church, Cordova Pentecostal Holiness Church, Laurel Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church, Gibson Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lake View Pentecostal Holiness Church along with other churches where he was needed.
In addition to his ministry, Rev. Young worked with the special needs children at Scotland High School as a personal care assistant. His love for gardening and small engine mechanics gave him a pathway to teach others. He was a man of many talents who enjoyed tinkering and repairing small engines. He loved reading, had a special passion for animals, especially horses. His travels to the beach and mountains brought him great joy as he admired God’s beautiful creation and wonderful scenery. Family was his life as he treasured each one leaving a legacy of love and Christian faith.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by grandsons, James Patrick and Bradley Lamar; brothers, Theiron Young, William Young and sisters, Betty Scott, Frances Mims, JoAnn Welch.
L.J. leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 66 years, Betty Driggers Young of their home; his children, Diane Y. Coble (Ken) of Laurinburg, Nita Y. Quick (Rodney) of Laurinburg, Sherry Y. Jones (Randy) of Columbia, SC, Rev. Jay Young, Jr., (Lisa) of Wilmington, Chris R. Young (Priscilla) of Laurinburg; brother, Rev. LaVaughn Young (Sarah) and sisters, Joyce DuBose, Donnie Floyd (Jimmy), Judy McAllister (Mickey); his adoring grandchildren, Faith Jones (Cory) Joshua Coble (Ashley), Megan Locklear (Johnathan), Rod Quick (Claire), C.J. Quick (Lindsey), Lind Sturkie (Kuniko), Abby Bost (Jonathan ), Erica Jones, Amber Jones, Michael Jones, Lauryn Young, Cortlyn Gonzales (Michael), Connor Young, Camryn Young, Brittany McMillan (Jeff), Casey Young, Jamie Young (Katelyn), Jacob Young, Dakota Yarborough and great grandchildren, Gabrielle, Trae, Addison, Wyatt, Ray, Brinleigh, Dalton, Lyla, Aki, Mako, Hii-Chan, Grayson, Beckett, Blakely, Kalyn, Gabriela, Kayden and M.J.. He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews, his church family, and a host of loving family and friends.
Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at the Maxton Fresh Manna Pentecostal Holiness Church and other times at the home of his daughter, Nita Quick.
