Retha Barber Stevens, age 86 of Bennettsville, SC passed away on Monday, September 16, 2019.
Born May 3, 1933 in Marlboro County, South Carolina, she was one of sixteen children of the late Arvin and Juanita Rogers Barber. She was the devoted wife of 54 years to the late Richard M. Stevens who preceded her in death in 2007. They resided in Central Square, New York for 55 years, where they loved and raised their family. She retired after many years from Carrier Heating and Air. After returning to Bennettsville, she served as a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church and the Springfield Church of God. Retha enjoyed cooking, baking, bowling and she cherished her time as a former Girl Scout Leader. To her family, she will forever be remembered as a loving wife, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and a devoted friend to many.
Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Stevens Walker and siblings, Pearl Burr, Florence Barber, Eston Barber, Nellie Brock, Cora Lee English, Prentice Barber, Virginia Brigman, Edmond Barber, Billy Barber, James Barber, Harold Barber, Ernest Barber, Everett Barber and Ruby Shoemake.
Retha is survived by her children, son, Richard M. Stevens, Jr., (Denise) of Central Square, NY; daughters, Becky Vigliotte (David) of Cornelius, NC, Rosalie Ramsey (Robert) of Hasting, NY, Darlene Stevens (Brad) of Bennettsville, SC; her sister, Shirley Odom (Johnny) of Laurel Hill; nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by Rev. David Shoemake. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Sunday beginning 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in the Pleasant Lawn Cemetery, Parish, New York.
