Martha “Vonnie” Jernigan Byrd, age 61 of Laurinburg passed away surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, June 22, 2019.
Funeral services to celebrate her life will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at St. John United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Harold Hunt. Burial will follow the service in Pinecrest Cemetery.
She was a loving daughter of the late Oliver and Annie Black Jernigan born July 16, 1957 in Scotland County. Vonnie was the devoted wife to the late Earl Byrd who preceded her in death in 2006. She retired after many years as a teacher with the Scotland County School System and served as a faithful member of St. John United Methodist Church. Many of her happy times included riding motorcycles with Earl and their friends. She enjoyed reading, traveling especially to the beach and mountains. Her greatest joy was sharing time with her family, especially with grandchildren who loving called her POPO. Her family will forever treasure her memory as a precious mother, loving grandmother, devoted sister, aunt and friend.
Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by son, Jason Byrd and brothers, Bobby Jernigan, Larry Jernigan, Herbie Jernigan and his wife Diane.
Vonnie is survived by her son, Josh Byrd and wife Lindsey of Gibson; daughter-in-law, Sheri Byrd of Gibson; grandchildren, Riley Byrd, Alysa Byrd, Jayci Byrd and Katie B. Byrd; Riley’s mother, Stephanie Skipper of Laurinburg; brothers, Pete Jernigan and wife Dorothy of New York, Tommy Jernigan and wife Margaret of McColl, SC; her sisters, Marcella Lovell and husband James of Gibson, Sue Mims and husband Jerry of Laurinburg, Judy Herring and husband Larry of Laurinburg; sister-in-law, Linda Jernigan and special nieces, Misty Phillips, Amber Smith, Macklee Phillips, along with a host of nieces, nephews and her loving family and friends.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28, at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
Vonnie requested for memorial donations to be given in her memory to Scotland Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 1033, Laurinburg, 28353.
