Lula “Lou” Strickland Nelson, age 74 of Raeford departed this life Sunday, November 24, 2019 surrounded by family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 30, 2019 at The Church of God of Prophecy in Raeford. Burial will follow in Raeford Cemetery.
Lou was born November 12, 1945 in Robeson County, loving daughter of the late George Strickland and Mary Rone Locklear Strickland. She was the loving wife of the late John M. Nelson. She retired after many years from Burlington Industries and was a faithful member of The Church of God of Prophecy. Her favorite pastimes were reading her Bible, fishing, crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, and watching television. Lou loved her family and friends and enjoyed spending time with each of them. She was a beloved mother, grandma, aunt and friend.
Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son, John M. Nelson, Jr.; brother, George Strickland, Jr.; sister, Patricia Locklear, Jane Baker, Myrtle Oxendine and her grandchild, Elizabeth Victoria Clark.
Lou is survived by her two sons, Joseph Nelson of the home, William Nelson (Nonji), of Raeford; daughters, Vicky Aponte (Orlando) of Fayetteville, Penny Nelson Killough of Rockingham; brothers, Jack Strickland of Laurinburg, Alfred Strickland, Alex Strickland, both of Pembroke; sisters, Shirley Strickland of Laurinburg, Annie P. McGirt of Red Springs; her treasured grandchildren, Bill, Joey, Makayla, Adia, Charlie, Libby, Yady, Sara, Orlando, Savannah, Kailin, Dakota, Gauge and great grandchildren, Caylie and McKenna. She also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, friends, along with her special K-9 companion, Shadow.
Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday, November 29, 2019 at Richard Boles Funeral Service
