Hurley Chavis, Sr.

Hurley Chavis, Sr., age 87 of Laurel Hill passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019.

He was a son of the late Willie and Ollie English Chavis born October 24, 1931 in Richmond County.  Hurley was employed with Z.V. Pate in Laurel Hill retiring after 33 years of service as the Maintenance Department Supervisor.  Before his illness, he attended the Laurel Hill Church of God of Prophecy.   He also enjoyed watching the races and going to the Atlanta Braves baseball games.  Most of all, Hurley loved sharing time with his family. 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Sallie Chavis; daughter, Alma Jean Chavis and siblings, Grover Chavis, Minnie Ruth Sweatt, Madeline Malloy and Jennie Mae Adcox.

Hurley is survived by his children, Diane Norton and husband Larry of Laurel Hill, James Chavis and wife Judy of Laurinburg, Hurley Chavis, Jr., and wife Darlene of Erma, NJ, Dannie Chavis and wife Cathy of Laurel Hill, Leigh Jeffery and husband Ronald of McColl, SC; grandchildren, Larry Norton, Jr, and Tasheta of Rocky Mount, Marcus Norton and Heather of Cary, Brittany Chavis of Greensboro, Kelton Chavis of Laurel Hill, Colby Chavis and Heather Easterling of Laurel Hill, Brittany Ryder and Michael of Massachusetts, Ashley Jeffery and Ronald A. Jeffery both of Laurinburg; nineteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; his siblings, Carson Chavis of Wake Forest, Lillian Guinn of Hamlet, Glennie Chavis and husband Richard of Hamlet along with her many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel with burial following in Pinecrest Cemetery.   The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday beginning at 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
