Cornelia Caulder Obituary

Cornelia Elizabeth “Lib” Caulder, age 91 of Laurinburg passed to her heavenly home on Wednesday, October 30, 2019.

Lib was a daughter of the late Connie Cornelius Avant and Ella Butler Avant born April 13, 1928 in Scotland County. She was the devoted wife of 50 years to the late Walter Caulder who preceded her in death in 1993.   Being a Mama, granny and “big GG” was her greatest joy. Before her illness, she loved preparing meals for her family and especially on Sundays when she would prepare a huge meal and all her children and grandchildren would gather in her home to enjoy mama’s buffet. Not only did our mama enjoy cooking for our family, but she enjoyed cooking for others as well. It was her gift and talent from the Lord. Friends would often stop by mama’s and ask, “do you happen to have a piece of that famous 14 layer chocolate cake?’. If the answer was “not today”, the following day she would deliver them a whole cake in which the main ingredient was love. Our mama will fondly be remembered for her collard sandwiches, quick wit, strong will, gentle hand of kindness and a servant’s heart.

In 1994, mama was diagnosed with Alzheimers and that began a new journey for her and our family. It was a journey of highs and lows, of many laughs and occasional tears. Some days mama and her family walked the journey and some days we ran. She was determined to continue to be active and often reminded each of us that she was still “the mama”. Early on the morning of October 30th, our mama finished her race and she could say, as the scriptures already have in Timothy 4:7, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

For the past 6 years Mama made her home at Scotia Village where she received excellent care from exceptional individuals. Our mama was not treated as just a resident or patient, but like a beloved family member. Our family will be forever grateful to Scotia Village and its wonderful staff. More recently, mama received compassionate “end of life” care from the caring and professional staff of Hospice of Scotland County.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Howard Morgan and grandson, Howard Russell “Bo” Morgan.

She leaves behind her children, Deanna Morgan of Laurinburg, Joe Caulder (Pauline) of Laurel Hill, Wanda Birchfield of Laurinburg, Phil Caulder (Loretta) of Hamlet, Tammie Gibson (Whit) of Laurinburg; grandchildren, Mickey Morgan (Michelle), Chris Morgan, Kevin Birchfield (Wendy), Mike Milligan (Chris), Jonathan Milligan (Melissa), Tonya Clark, Wendy Flowers; her many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate her life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel with burial following in Hillside Memorial Park.  Pastor Michael Malpass will officiate the services.   The family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Richard Boles Funeral Service.  The family will also be receiving friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday evening at the home of her daughter, Tammie Gibson.

Memorial donations are requested to be given in her memory to Scotland Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353 or Scotia Village, 2200 Elm Avenue, Laurinburg, NC  28352
