Shelton Layne Smith, Sr.

Shelton Layne Smith, Sr., age 74 of Gibson, NC, passed away on March 23, 2024.

Shelton was one of five children born January 1, 1950 to the late Willis D. Smith and the late Eula Lee Leviner Smith of Scotland County, NC.  He had a long career with Civil Service retiring in 1983 and then became a traveling welder working as a shipfitter. He was a traveling man who was also able to enjoy his work taking him from place to place.  In his leisure time, Shelton enjoyed playing golf and fishing.  He will dearly be missed by those who knew and loved him.

Along with his parents, he is predeceased by brother, Leonard Smith, Danny Smith, Johnny Smith, Buddy Smith and sister, Wanda Hayes.

Shelton is survived by his children, Shelton L. Smith, Jr., (Stephanie) of Orlando, FL, Veronica S. Hatcher (Simmie) of Laurel Hill, Robin S. English (JR) of Laurel Hill; their mother, Peggy Drabenstot; grandchildren, Michael Smith, Rachel Ridlespurge , Emily Smith, Haleigh Smith, Shelton Smith III, Reid McElroy, Quinton McElroy, Brandon Hatcher, Bradley Hatcher (Taylor), Alex Hatcher, Skyla English, Cheyenne English, Trey English; great grandchildren, Nadelyn Ridlespurge, Dylan Ridlespurge, Jessi Hatcher, Cole Hatcher, Brantley Hatcher along with a host of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel. 

Family will have a time of visitation following the service at the funeral home.
