Ella Elizabeth Fleming McDonald died peacefully at her Scotia Village home on March 18, 2024, at the age of 86. She was born July 22, 1937, in Florence County, SC, to Velma and Calvin Fleming. In 1955, Ella married Allen McDonald. The two of them were inseparable through thick and thin until his death in 2019. Allen lovingly cared for Ella as her health declined. In recent years she received compassionate care from the special nurses and staff at Scotia Village who became her family for the last 5 years.
After moving to Laurinburg from Clio, SC, Ella worked many years in the Scotland County School System in various schools and clerical jobs including Pate Gardner School, the Central Office, and Scotland High School. She was a talented seamstress, an animal lover, and a member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church in Laurinburg. She was quiet, generous, and caring toward others and to her family.
Ella is survived by her two children: Max McDonald (Mary) and Sharon McDonald Williamson (Jim). She was blessed with three grandchildren: Emily McDonald Harris (Zack), Will McDonald (Emily), and Cole Williamson, along with two great-granddaughters: Kate and Paige Harris. She is also survived by her special sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Glynn Atkinson, and several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A private family service will be held at a later date at the Saint Luke United Methodist Church Columbarium. Those wishing to honor Ella’s life may donate to Scotland Regional Hospice, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353, to The Scotland County Humane Society, 1401 West Blvd, Laurinburg NC 28352, or to Scotia Village Foundation, 2200 Elm Ave, Laurinburg, NC 28352.
