Barney "Gene" Eugene Hollis

Barney “Gene” Eugene Hollis, age 89 of Carthage, NC, formerly of Laurinburg, departed this life for his Heavenly home on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

Gene was born in Hazelhurst, Georgia, on May 14, 1934,  loving son of the late Arthur Allen Hollis and the late Odell Griffin Hollis.  He married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Edge Hollis and together they shared 59 ½ years wonderful years until her passing in 2017. Gene proudly served the nation beginning in the United States Air Force and then joining the United States Army bravely serving during the Korean War.  He continued his career with Civil Service specializing in the Army Aviation System Command as a Technical Support Commander. He also enjoyed semi-retirement working security with L.O.F. / Pilkington Glass. 

Following retirement, Gene concentrated his time faithfully serving God involved with all aspects of the church and being a true witness to lead souls to Christ. He was a good man with a kind, sweet spirit who loved and cherished his family and their time shared together.

Along with his parents and precious wife, he is preceded in death by daughter, Mary Lynn Honeycutt; brother, Jerry M. Hollis; and sister, Lois V. Hawthorn.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Gwendolyn "Gwen" Hollis Pate of Carthage, NC and his adored grandchildren, Nicholas Adam Noll, Adam Christopher Eccher, Danielle Collins, McKenzie Pate along with his loving extended family and devoted friends.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024 at the Springhill Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Jeff Stone.  Burial with military honors will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.   The family will have a time of visitation prior to services on Sunday beginning at 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the church.
